چکیده

We present three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the nonlinear evolution of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) with a non-zero Ohmic resistivity. The simulations begin from a homogeneous (unstratified) density distribution, and use the local shearing-box approximation. The evolution of a variety of initial field configurations and strengths is considered, for several values of constant coefficient of resistivity η. For uniform vertical and toroidal magnetic fields we find unstable growth consistent with the linear analyses; finite resistivity reduces growth rates, and, when large enough, stabilizes the MRI. Even when unstable modes remain, resistivity has significant effects on the nonlinear state. The properties of the saturated state depend on the initial magnetic field configuration. In simulations with an initial uniform vertical field, the MRI is able to support angular momentum transport even for large resistivities through the quasi-periodic generation of axisymmetric radial channel solutions rather than through the maintenance of anisotropic turbulence. Reconnective processes rather than parasitic instabilities mediate the resurgent channel solution in this case. Simulations with zero net flux show that the angular momentum transport and the amplitude of magnetic energy after saturation are significantly reduced by finite resistivity, even at levels where the linear modes are only slightly affected. The MRI is unable to sustain angular momentum transport and turbulent flow against diffusion for ReM ∼ 10, where the Reynolds number is defined in terms of the disk scale height and sound speed, ReM = csH/η. As this is close to the Reynolds numbers expected in low, cool states of dwarf novae, these results suggest that finite resistivity may account for the low and high angular momentum transport rates inferred for these systems. Axisymmetric Magnetorotational Instability in Viscous Accretion Disks

Axisymmetric magnetorotational instability (MRI) in viscous accretion disks is investigated by linear analysis and two-dimensional nonlinear simulations. The linear growth of the viscous MRI is characterized by the Reynolds number defined as RMRI ≡ v A/νΩ, where vA is the Alfvén velocity, ν is the kinematic viscosity, and Ω is the angular velocity of the disk. Although the linear growth rate is...

Two-dimensional Simulations of Magnetorotational Instability in a Magnetized Couette Flow

In preparation for an experimental study of magnetorotational instability (MRI) in liquid metal, we present non-ideal two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the nonlinear evolution of MRI in the experimental geometry. The simulations adopt initially uniform vertical magnetic fields, conducting or insulating radial boundaries, and periodic vertical boundary conditions. No-slip condit...

Laboratory Study of Magnetorotational Instability and Hydrodynamic Stability at Larger Reynolds Numbers

Rapid angular momentum transport in accretion disks has been a longstanding astrophysical puzzle. Molecular viscosity is inadequate to explain observationally inferred accretion rates. Since Keplerian flow profiles are linearly stable in hydrodynamics, there exist only two viable mechanisms for the required turbulence: nonlinear hydrodynamic instability or magnetohydrodynamic instability. The l...

Saturation and Thermalization of the Magnetorotational Instability: Recurrent Channel Flows and Reconnections

The nonlinear evolution and the saturation mechanism of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) are investigated using three-dimensional resistive MHD simulations. A local shearing box is used for our numerical analysis and the simulations begin with a purely vertical magnetic field. We find that the magnetic stress in the nonlinear stage of the MRI is strongly fluctuating. The time evolution s...

The Effect of the Hall Term on the Nonlinear Evolution of the Magnetorotational Instability: I. Local Axisymmetric Simulations

The effect of the Hall term on the evolution of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in weakly ionized accretion disks is investigated using local axisymmetric simulations. First, we show that the Hall term has important effects on the MRI when the temperature and density in the disk is below a few thousand K and between 1013 and 1018 cm−3 respectively. Such conditions can occur in the quies...
